Is This Website Safe? A 5-Minute Checklist Before You Enter Your Data
Before typing a password, card number, or personal information into any website, it's worth spending five minutes checking whether the site is actually trustworthy. Here's a simple checklist anyone can follow — no technical background required.
1. Check for HTTPS
Look for a padlock icon next to the URL. This means the connection is encrypted, but it does NOT mean the site is legitimate — scammers can get HTTPS too. It's a minimum requirement, not proof of trust.
2. Look Closely at the Domain Name
Scammers often use domains that look almost identical to a real brand — an extra letter, a hyphen, or a different ending (.net instead of .com). Read the domain character by character before trusting it.
3. Check if the Site Has Been Flagged as Malicious
Security vendors maintain blacklists of known malicious and phishing sites. Running the URL through a malware and blacklist checker takes a few seconds and can catch sites that have already been reported.
4. Check If Your Email Has Been in a Breach
If you're about to reuse a password on a new site, first check whether your email has appeared in a known data breach. If it has, that password may already be compromised elsewhere.
5. Trust Your Instincts
Urgent countdown timers, unrealistic discounts, and pressure to 'act now' are classic manipulation tactics. Legitimate businesses rarely need to rush you into a decision.
